Given we have many new residents who may not have been to a Block Captains meeting and don't know how to respond when a nuisance appears on their block, here's a recap.
If there's a house on your block that is a chronic nuisance (loud noise, suspected drug dealing, kids out after curfew, people loitering in the front and back, fighting, etc.) call 911 and say the following:
"I am calling about a nuisance property and their address is ______________."
Describe the behavior and people involved. Be prepared to give specifics about Who, What, When and Where.
Using the phrase 'Nuisance property' gets the call flagged and is reported to your Neighborhood Stabilization Officer (NSO) and Alderperson. Three nuisance calls to one property within a month leads to an investigation by the City's Nuisance Committee.
It also helps (but is not required) to leave a call back number for the 911 dispatcher. You can request that the police call you once on the scene and also request that they not come to your door.
Follow up with a call to your NSO. NSO's are assigned by Ward. Find out who your NSO is here: FIND YOUR NSO
Many block captains post regularly to the Tower Grove South Yahoo Group; we want to help and can provide answers.
